Guitar Hero Rocks the 80s Mini-Review

Like (probably) a lot of people, I picked up the latest incarnation of Guitar Hero this week, despite knowing full well that I was spending the price of a full game on what is basically an expansion pack. What can I say… it’s new Guitar Hero, so it’s mandatory. And it’s the 80s, which means I recognized almost every song in it immediately. (Half of them are in my iPod, I think.)

So far I’ve only played it on Medium and a little bit of Hard, but it seems like it’s actually a bit more challenging on those levels than GH2 is. Of course, the difficulty ramps up faster than GH2 as well, since this one has only 30 songs. (That’s over a dollar a song, in case you’re counting.)

One thing that disappointed me, besides the small number of songs, is that they didn’t bother to include all of the GH2 characters, and there don’t seem to be alternate outfits available for the ones they did include. I was really hoping Lars Umlaut (my favorite character by far) would be in there, especially given the potentially high cheese factor of watching him play 80s hair metal. The guitars and finishes also seem to be the same set from GH2.

Even though there isn’t much of it, the music is pretty good. Very few of the tracks are inspiring enough to make me play them over and over, but most of them bring back memories. If I had to pick favorites, I’d probably choose “Electric Eye” and “I Wanna Rock”. All in all, I’m still a bit miffed at the price, but I like this version of Guitar Hero if only because of the familiarity of the music. I just wish they had made it available as an XBox 360 download at the same time, especially since I have a PS3 now and had to drag my PS2 out of mothballs and coax it into working again just to play this. Will it hold me over until Guitar Hero 3 and Rock Band? I’m not sure, but at least it’s fun.
